Know if a sale is worth it.

NorthCart tracks prices at Canadian stores and gives each deal a NorthScore out of 100, with the reasons in plain words. We're starting with Amazon.ca and plan to add more stores over time.

How NorthScore works

Each deal gets a NorthScore from 0 to 100, based on its price history and how well it sells. It's worked out the same way for every product, and what we earn from a sale has no effect on it.

Discount
How far the price is below what the item usually sells for (its 90-day average), rather than the "was" price a store shows. 40% or more below usual earns the full 50 points.
+50
90-day low
The lowest price in the last 90 days earns 15. Within 5% of that low earns 8.
+15
Lowest ever
The lowest price we've recorded earns 10. Within 5% of it earns 5.
+10
Popularity
How well it sells compared with similar products. Best sellers earn 15, popular items 10 and steady sellers 5.
+15
Availability
In stock at least 90% of the last 90 days earns 10. At least 70% earns 5.

What takes points away

Inflated "was" price
If the "was" price is set high so the discount looks bigger than it is, we take off up to 20 points and show the actual saving.
-20
Price raised before the sale
If the price went up in the month before a "sale", we take off 5 points.
-5

We only show a deal if it scores at least 55 and is at least 10% below its usual price. With less than 30 days of price history, a score is capped at 60 and the deal isn't shown in the feed. With less than 90 days, it's capped at 85.

Star ratings and reviews aren't part of the score, which is based on price history and sales. You can read reviews on the store's site from any deal.
